What NATE Certification is and Why it Matters

November 08, 2016

Strogen's Service Experts in Rochester always writes about how our service techs are NATE-certified, and while it sounds encouraging, what does it actually mean?

NATE is an abbreviation for North American Technician Excellence and, as stated on their website, is the nation’s largest certification organization for HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) and refrigeration technicians. The organization was developed nearly 20 years ago and is supported by the entire HVAC and refrigeration industry but not everyone in the industry is required to be NATE-certified. The certification is voluntary and technicians can service heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration equipment without being certified through NATE.

It’s important to Strogen's Service Experts that our technicians are NATE-certified to make sure we are sending the most qualified and skilled technicians into your home. To make sure experts meet these standards, the NATE-certification tests validate real-world working knowledge of HVAC and refrigeration systems for technicians. The tests are knowledge-based assessments that assess the technician’s knowledge of these standards.

Since Strogen's Service Experts focuses on the HVAC side of NATE-certification (not refrigeration), there are only specific areas pertinent to our technicians. NATE exam candidates may obtain installation and/or service certification in one or more of the talent areas listed below:

  • Air Conditioning
  • Air Distribution
  • Gas Heating
  • Oil Heating
  • Heat Pumps
  • Hydronics Gas (service only)
  • Hydronics Oil (service only)
  • Light Commercial Refrigeration (service only)
  • Commercial Refrigeration (service only)
  • Ground Source Heat Pump Loop Installer
  • Senior HVAC Efficiency Analyst
