How a Pressure Switch Works
This part plays an important role as your furnace prepares to work in your house.
Here’s what occurs after your thermostat’s call for heat:
- Your furnace’s control board begins running the draft inducer blower motor. This exhausts combustion gases from the heat exchanger and moves in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
- When the pressure switch senses that plenty of air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and commands the control board to ignite the furnace.
- Your furnace ignites and creates heat.
What Happens When a Pressure Switch Fails
When your pressure switch isn’t operating correctly, you’ll likely hear the fan going and the switch clicking a few times before the furnace shuts down completely. When a part isn’t functioning right, your furnace will turn off as a safety precaution.
Your furnace will let you know something is amiss with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to present error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.
You may notice short flashes or an alternating slow flash as it transmits a fault code.
