Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is a great organization that offers financial support to men and women in the construction trade who endured life-altering injuries. Every year the association honors various recipients with a grant and in 2016 the Joseph Groh Foundation was excited to introduce Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, raised in Pakistan, received his MBA from the University of Chicago and in 2003 bought ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and obtained his HVAC and general contracting license. Ten years later, Adil experienced a major stroke at only 48 years old. He lost the ability to use his left arm and the experience left his left leg greatly impaired, resulting in foot drop. Due to the fact he had to use a heavy brace to walk, his muscles began to deteriorate and his doctors feared that he would ultimately end up restricted to a wheelchair.

Unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their single source of income, putting financial tension on the couple with three children in college and one in elementary school. Their hopes were lifted when Adil was introduced to the WalkAid System, a device that utilizes functional electrical stimulation to help someone with foot drop walk again. However, Adil and Laila soon learned that they could not afford the equipment in addition to the intensive rehab that would be needed so he could learn how to use it.

Luckily, a specialist at WalkAid told Adil and Laila about the Joseph Groh Foundation and, due to the generous grant, Adil obtained the WalkAid System and has been overjoyed at the success. His muscle is starting to regenerate and not atrophy, bringing hope back to Adil and Laila.
